When you're using a bus remember to:
Be patient
Be courteous
Consider others
Think before you act
Remember when you catch the bus at school make a line with no running and no pushing. You have to be careful around buses.
In some cities buses go past the bus stop going lots of different places. So you wave to stop the bus going to the place you want to go to.You have to read the sign on the bus to make sure it’s going where you want to go. Then you hold out your arm so the driver knows you want to get on
Bus doors can be dangerous. It’s best to stand back until they are open and then get on.
It is usually best to pay for your bus trip with coins. Bus drivers don’t carry much change so it’s better to try and give them the right amount.Or you could buy a bus pass so you don’t have to worry about money. You just show the pass to the driver and they'll let you on or the driver might clip or swipe your ticket to show you’ve travelled using it.
When you're on board a bus sit (if there are enough seats) and quietly talk or read or listen to music on headphones. That’s the way you should act on a bus. The driver has to concentrate so everyone gets where they are going safely. You should always stay behind the driver and keep the noise down so you don’t distract him.
You can’t eat or drink on a bus. If the bus stopped suddenly you might spill it everywhere and make a mess.
Its very good manners to offer your seat to someone who needs it more than you, like to elderly people or pregnant women.
If you do have to stand on the bus hold the rail or the back of a seat. Sometimes buses have to start or stop quickly and if you’re standing you should hold onto the rail or a seat so you don’t fall over.
To get off the bus push the button before your stop so the driver will know you want to get off. Some older buses have a rope to pull but most new ones have buttons.
When you get off the bus try to use the door at the front of the bus. That way the driver can easily see that you’re safely off before he drives away.
Wait for the bus to drive away before you crosses the road. You should never cross the road right next to a bus. The bus driver can’t always see you, you can’t always see what’s behind the bus and traffic can’t always see you!
The first buses were called ‘omnibus’ which is a latin word meaning ‘for all’
Many early buses had seats in them like park benches and the only way in or out of the bus was at the back of the bus
The first motorized bus was used around 1905, and was sometimes called an autobus, which then got shortened to bus (thank goodness)
A ‘bendy bus’ is normally about 20 meters long (nearly three cars long), while a normal bus is about 12 meters long (two cars long). To make ‘bendy buses’ able to be safe enough for our roads and streets with all that length, they are fitted with an extra pair of wheels and a flexible joint in the middle.
You need to be very careful getting on and off a bus, especially a bendy bus so be extra careful at these times.
The more people that catch a bus - the fewer the cars on the road. That means less pollution on the planet, see if you can figure out why?
The speed limit for driving past a school bus on either side of the road in New Zealand is 20 km/h.
School Buses are one of the safest forms of transport on the road having far less accidents than all other traffic on the road in some countries buses have eight times less the number of accidents than cars!
