Respect

Facts

Respect means you think highly of someone because of what they do and how clever they are at something and you treat them with courtesy. Courtesy means being polite and respectful.

Different people like different things like playing different sports. You might like netball and your friend might like soccer and you need to respect their choice.

Different people like different things - celebrate the differences and respect peoples choice

Remember that you can't learn or buy respect it has to be earned.

Respect is about showing tolerance, acceptance and common decency towards the people around us – our family, friends and people we may not even have met (yet). It makes no difference if these people are older or younger than us, from a  different walk of life or who follow different cultures or religions. They might even be a different race to you ...show them Respect

Respect is about being considerate of the consequences of our behaviour for others.

Want to gain some respect then try these hints :
Use good manners, like saying please and thank you.
Share things like toys, games and food with other people in your family.
Look after your own things and take care of other things in the house (eg. not jumping on furniture, and wiping your feet etc, so that the house is a good place for everyone to be).
Wait your turn when talking.
Listen to people.
Understand that you will not always get what you want.
Help with chores without being asked

Did you know ?

Anna Richards who is in the respect episode of Bryan and Bobby is the captain of the New Zealand Womens Rugby team 'The Black Ferns'

She started playing for the Black ferns in 1990.

Anna has won two rugby  World Cups, and  in over 100 games of rugby Anna only lost two.Her last international loss was against England in 2001, at Albany. Anna gives her mum and dad respect and gets respect back from them. When Anna was asked about her mum and dad in the paper Anna said "Mum and dad are cool."

Anna has also played provincial tennis and netball. Represented New Zealand in touch rugby and sevens rugby ! All this and Anna has also been an international rugby player for the last15 years.

Remember "If you give respect you get respect" and in 2005 Anna was awarded the New Zealand order of merit for her services to rugby by the Governor General of New Zealand and the Queen ! Way to go Anna !

Can you think of some ways that you can make your class at school a 'respect zone' ? Have a chat to your teacher and here are some things to think about when you go to school....
You  might meet with kids from different backgrounds, maybe different countries, cultures and religions.
Some people may look very different to you and your family.
Some people may behave very differently to you and your family.
You can respect their differences and expect that they will respect yours.
If people are behaving badly towards you and hurting you or your feelings, then you cannot, and must not, respect their unkind behaviour (like bullying as an example).

RESPECT = IF YOU GIVE RESPECT YOU GET RESPECT !
