Traffic

Facts

Traffic is a name for evrything on the road...cars,trucks,vans,pedestrians,bicycles,skateboards,utes,scooters,tractors....even cows can be traffic - if they are on the road!

A pedestrian is someone who walks on the footpath or crosses the road.

Walk on the footpath don't run! Stay away from the kerb and closer to the side of the kerb that the houses are nearest (away from the road).

If you do have to cross the road use a safe place like at traffic lights,a pedestrian crossing or at school patrol crossings.

Then always remember to:
STOP
LOOK
AND LISTEN

STOP - and take one step away from the kerb

LOOK - in every direction that traffic may come from. Be sure to take good, slow looks for traffic. To be extra safe have two looks, both ways, up and down the road.

LISTEN - for traffic that you can’t see. If you can’t hear any traffic, or see any traffic, then it’s safe to walk across.

BUT.... DON"T RUN!!!!  TRAFFIC MAY NOT SEE YOU IF YOU ARE MOVING TOO FAST!!!

If you’re with an adult you trust you should ALWAYS cross the road with them. You can even hold their hand if you want to.

If there is one, choose to use a pedestrian crossing or pedestrian signal at traffic lights when you cross the road.

Traffic moves fast and drivers aren't always focusing on pedestrians. (They're more worried about other vehicles!) When one vehicle crashes into another a lot of damage can be done to the vehicles and the passengers inside.  Imagine what could happen if a vehicle crashes into a person!

Always walk across the road so traffic can see you clearly and carefully choose the safest place to cross - so you're still here to watch the next episode of Bryan & Bobby!

 Did you know

The place where more people get hurt than any other is on the road. In 2005 over 400 people died on the roads in New Zealand...that's more than anywhere else in the world.

The history of the automobile dates back to the 15th century when Leonardo da Vinci was creating designs and models for transport vehicles.

In 1896, the first motor vehicle was built in New Zealand by Cecil Woods of Timaru.

In 1905, the first car trip from Wellington to Auckland took place - it took 7 days! Now it generally only takes about 7 hours.

Over 32,000 people have died on the roads of New Zealand since 1908 ! Remember that most crashes that injure people happen in 50 km/h areas and most often within a few kilometres of home. SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL

Mary Anderson was the person who invented a window cleaning device and she did it in November of 1903. Her invention could clean snow, rain, or sleet from a windshield by using a handle inside the car. The device became what we call a windscreen wiper but it didn't get added to all cars until 1913,10 years after it was invented.

In 2005 63 million cars and light trucks were made.

In the future we may be driving electric cars instead of petrol cars.

As well as being an ex Silver Fern who played 61 tests for New Zealand. A silver commonwealth medal winner and the current Samoan netball coach. Linda Vagana, who appears in the programme 'Traffic', is also the General Manager of 'Books in Homes'. Now that is a very busy lady!

In 1923 the first car radio was offered to people who brought new cars.

Ada,” the first railway train left Auckland for Onehunga on 24 December 1873 and from that time all trains had to be met by the local policeman as they passed through their towns and villages around the country. This was because the engine driver was often given important documents to be handed over to the local constable and it was the quickest way to delivery them.

The first time a police car is recored as going to the scene of a crime in New Zealand was the 25th of August 1920.
