Keeping Safe

Facts

There are some simple things to remember to help keep you safe:
Always tell your caregiver where you’re going (like if you want to go to a friends place after school)
Choose safe places to go
Play with your friends (especially in public places - don't wander off by yourself)
If you feel uncomfortable about something or you don't feel safe tell someone you trust about it and keep telling people you trust until someone helps you

By telling someone where you are going, with who and for how long, if anything were to happen and you needed help people would know where to look first .

When you are somewhere other than home or at school and you don’t feel safe it’s always a good idea to get to a public place where there are people about , like into the nearest shop or somewhere where someone you know is at home. Don’t forget though that if you see an ambulance officer, firefighter or police officer that they will always try to help you.

It might be much quicker to nip home using a short cut but it’s safer to stick to the main roads that are well lit and have lots of traffic on them. It’s sometimes better to take your time to do things rather than hurry them.

Its really important that if someone is making you feel scared or uncomfortable to tell an adult that you trust and to keep telling them until they believe you

It’s a good idea you know your address and phone number, that way you can always call someone to come and collect you

It’s good to go places with your mates, not only is it heaps more fun but it’s safer.

Did you know

Knowing how to stay safe is just as important as knowing the family rules. Have a chat to your mum, dad, caregiver or an adult you can trust about how to stay safe.

Find safe areas for you. Safe areas are places where you can stop if you need help, like the houses of kids you know, your parents' friends' houses, stores, restaurants, police stations, libraries, and fire departments. When you're walking or riding your bike, make a mental note of the safe areas on the way to and from places. That way, you'll know where they are in case you ever need one.

There is only one of you and you are very special so we want you to do your best to keep yourself safe at all times.
