Always ask an adult before you touch a tool.
Or stick to the tools that are safe for you to use – check with your folks about the tools you can use (scissors, pencil sharpeners etc)
They might look like a lot of fun to use but tools are not play things - you could really hurt yourself or someone else
If you get a Math’s question wrong you might get a cross on the page, but if you make a mistake with tools, you could really hurt yourself or someone else.
It’s really important to keep dangerous tools and chemicals out of the reach of small children. That means put them in a lockable cupboard or up high on a shelf. So check and see if the workshop is safe
One of the ways to learn how to safely use tools is to be shown by one of your parents. They can supervise you while you build and make sure you are using the tools safely.
A kitset model from the shops is a good way to learn how to use tools without it being too dangerous. An adult can help you.
Tools in a household workshop are the same as tools that are used by tradesmen on a building site. Often tools on a building site are bigger and more powerful because they have to do a lot of work and last a long time.
Facts about some tools:
Here are some tools you may find in the workshop and what they do:
Axes – have a sharp cutting blade on the end of a handle and are used to cut wood. Scientists believe axes have been used since 6000 BC!
Chisel - has a sharp cutting edge, for carving and/or cutting a hard material like wood, stone, or metal.
Saw – has a hard blade or wire with a serrated (zigzag) edge to cut through softer materials like wood. Saws can be powered by hand, or powered by steam, water, electric or other power. Saws are one of the first tools humans made and used!
Drill - has a rotating drill bit used for drilling holes in lots of different things. Drills are normally used in woodworking, metalworking, or construction. The word drill comes from the Dutch word 'Drillen'. The earliest drills were used by the Egyptians which makes them as old as the pyramids!
Wrench or spanner – is used to provide more force/pressure to turn bolts, nuts or other hard-to-turn items. There are lots of different wrenches for different jobs even a monkey wrench (but it isn't for Monkeys :0) and a peanut butter wrench (yes you can use it for Peanut butter!)
Jigsaw (not the puzzle kind :0) – has a thin saw blade used for cutting curves, like a stencil at school for instance or other shapes, into a piece of wood. Most carpenters or builders will have a jigsaw as part of their tool kit. A jigsaw can be used to cut a lot of different things metal, plastic and of course wood.
